Flying colours: Rheinmetall successfully tests 50kW high-energy laser weapon

Rheinmetall has successfully tested its new 50kW high-energy weapon technology demonstrator. Conducted at the end of November, the test encompassed the entire operational sequence from target detection and tracking to target engagement. Building on a 123-year heritage, the Düsseldorf, Germany-based Group has once again made good its claim to be the global leader in high-energy laser (HEL) technology.
The test was conducted at Rheinmetall’s Ochsenboden Proving Groud (EZO) in Switzerland, in snowy conditions and blinding sunlight, and was initially supposed to show the increase in efficiency of the 50kW HEL weapon compared with the 10kW version demonstrated last year. A five-fold increase in laser power was thus available for the individual scenarios, which included Air Defence, Counter Rocket, Artillery, Mortar/C-RAM, and Asymmetric Warfare operations. Furthermore, the tests were intended to prove that separately located HEL weapon stations using Rheinmetall’s existing Beam Superimposing Technology (BST) are able to irradiate a single target in a superimposed, cumulative manner. This modular technology approach makes it possible to maintain the very good beam quality of the individual laser modules, increasing overall performance several times over. Thus, from the technical stand-point, nothing stands in the way of a future HEL weapon system with a 100kW output.
The 50kW HEL weapon technology demonstrator consisted of two functional models: a 30kW weapon station integrated into an Oerlikon Revolver Gun air defence turret for static and dynamic tests, coupled with an Oerlikon Skyguard fire control unit; and a 20kW weapon station integrated into a Revolver Gun turret of the first-generation, patched in for static tests. There were also additional modules for supplying power.
Witnessed by leading experts, the demonstration delivered compelling evidence for the 50kW HEL weapon technology demonstrator’s high stability: a massive, 15mm-thick steel girder was cut through at a distance of 1,000 metres. The successful shooting down of several nose-diving target drones at a range of two kilometres formed the second major highlight. Though they were flying at over 50 metres a second, the Skyguard radar had no trouble detecting the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles at a distance of three kilometres. Then the 30kW weapon station used the Skyguard data to carry out rough tracking mechanically. The optical tracking system in the Beam Forming Units (BFU’s) in the individual leaser weapon modules performed fine tracking of the UAVs. After reaching the programmed fire sector the laser weapon modules engaged the UAV’s immediately and destroyed the incoming UAVs within a few seconds.

The third highlight: detection, pursuit and successful engagement of an extremely small ballistic target. A steel ball measuring 82 mm in diameter and travelling at approximately 50 m/sec, the target replicated a mortar round. The Skyguard fire control unit immediately detected the target, followed by mechanical tracking with the 30kW laser weapon station. At this point, the BFU of the laser weapon module took over, optically tracking the target, which was then engaged and destroyed in flight, leaving no doubt as to the tactical viability of using laser weapons in future C-RAM scenarios. Moreover, the test makes clear that the time necessary for engaging mortar rounds at long ranges can be substantially reduced. Today, the required engagement time is already low enough to be in the region needed for C-RAM applications – even when adverse weather conditions make targets difficult to detect.
These tests have silenced the sceptics, proving that Rheinmetall’s HEL weapon technology demonstrators can neutralize targets even under the most difficult weather conditions, including snow, dazzling sunlight, ice and rain. Furthermore, the tests provide compelling proof that Rheinmetall leads the way in matching the energy and cooling requirements of a future HEL weapon system to the operational scenario requirements. Compared to last year, Rheinmetall has significantly increased the power density (kW/m3) of the technology demonstrator, enabling it produce twice the laser output within the same volume.

Gabbiano T-20 radar demonstrated on Hermes 459 UAS

Selex Galileo has announced that its Gabbiano T-20 radar has successfully demonstrated its ground-mapping and target detection capabilities in a series of recent flight trials aboard an Elbit Systems Hermes 450 UAS.
According to the company, the trials were conducted to assess the T-20’s high resolution ground mapping, with both Strip and Spot SAR modes, and Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) capabilities. With both features proving successful, the Gabbiano was able to detect moving targets on the ground at up to 40 nautical miles and deliver high quality digital images of the terrain below.

The Gabbiano radars are lightweight, easy to install and come with a wide range of state of the art modes. For Air to Sea operations, the radar’s ISAR imaging mode and concooperative target classification make the difference in maritime patrol and search & rescue missions. Among the wide suite of operating modes, the Gabbiano radars boast Terrain Avoidance mode for low altitude navigation aid, certified weather-avoidance for safe navigation in all weather conditions, and air-to-air Search and Track capabilities. For covert operations the Radar implements Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) capabilities.

Mario Zucchelli, head of airborne radar Italy, Selex Galileo, said: ‘The very low power consumption and compact, lightweight design of the Gabbiano radar makes it ideally suited for a wide range of UAS applications. Because of our ownership of the radar design, we’re able to continue to add advanced modes to the Gabbiano radar family, adding a huge amount of value for the customer while remaining cost effective.’

Since the radar’s entry into service in 2009 various versions of the Gabbiano radar have been selected by customers around the world for integration on manned and unmanned aircraft including the ATR42 MP, Embraer KC390, Beechcraft B350, AW-139 and AW-101 helicopters, several UAS and parts of costal radar surveillance systems.

Since 2011, a number of international customers have also chosen to procure Hermes UAS systems with the Gabbiano T-20 and Gabbiano T-200 radar payloads installed on Hermes 450 and Hermes 900 UASs respectively.

Thales successfully deploys Link 16 satcom capability

Neuilly-sur-Seine, 6th December 2012 – The recent NAWAS and CWIX exercises marked the first successful deployment by French forces of the Thales solution for long-range Link 16 transmission of tactical data via satellite.

During the exercises, the compact, readily deployable TopLink-MINT solution from Thales was used for long-range transmission of tactical situation data to NATO and allied systems, providing an opportunity to:
    demonstrate rapid operational implementation of a Link 16 network extension capability
    validate compliance with the JREAP standard (Joint Range Extension Application Protocol) and its interoperability with NATO and allied systems.

"Thales is proud to have taken part in these exercises, which have successfully demonstrated the excellent performance of our systems and their inherent interoperability in the context of joint and coalition operations involving several nations," said Hervé Derrey, VP for Thales Communications & Security's Radio Communication Products business. "The armed forces now have the assurance that platforms equipped with our solution will deliver the rapid deployability, long-range extension and interoperability they need."


About the TopLink-MINT station

In addition to the standard Link 16 function via MIDS radio network, the TopLink-MINT station from Thales incorporates the JRE capability (Joint Range Extension) for relaying Link 16 information from the MIDS network over an infrastructure network or via satellite.




About the NAWAS and CWIX exercises

The NAWAS 2012 exercise was organised and conducted by the three branches of the French armed forces under the leadership of the Land Forces Command (CFT). Its objective was to confirm the ability of the armed forces to provide an effective air defence capability for expeditionary land forces on the move.

The Coalition Warrior Interoperability eXploration, eXperimentation, eXamination, eXercise (CWIX) is an annual exercise to test and improve the interoperability of operational information systems deployed by NATO nations.

The exercise uses a range of scenarios to demonstrate technical and operational readiness and deploy equipment and systems in live situations to test their ability to recognise each other and communicate in the theatre of operations.

It is also an opportunity for government agencies and industry to deploy prototypes and demonstrators to showcase new technologies in realistic situations. Around 150 information systems and 800 personnel were involved in this annual exercise.

M2A1 Machine Gun features greater safety, heightened lethality

The U.S. Army recently announced that the M2A1 .50 Caliber Machine Gun was among its top 10 “Army Greatest Inventions” for the 2011 calendar year.
The M2A1 includes new modern features and design improvements that make it easier and safer to use including a quick change barrel, fixed headspace and timing and a new flash hider that reduces the weapon’s signature by 95 percent at night.
“The M2A1 builds upon the legend of a phenomenal weapon system,” said Lt. Col. Thomas Ryan, Product Manager Crew Served Weapons.
“Soldiers already rank the M2 among the most effective weapon systems in their arsenal. The upgrades we’ve incorporated will keep this weapon relevant well into the future. We’re looking forward to working with our sister services to put this capability in the hands of even more warfighters across the Department of Defense.”
The original M2 “Ma Deuce” .50 Caliber Machine Gun is a belt-fed, heavy machine gun that mounts on most aircraft and vehicles and can be fired from a tripod. The system is highly effective against light armored vehicles, low- and slow-flying aircraft, boats and enemy personnel.
The Army developed the M2A1 to meet the requirement to increase the warfighter’s lethality and survivability on the battlefield by providing system upgrades to the M2.
Solving the Headspace and Timing Challenge
The current M2 requires Soldiers to manually set “headspace and timing.” This technical procedure is required before firing, after assembly and after required barrel changes when the barrel becomes extremely hot from high volumes of fire.
“Headspace” is the distance between the face of the bolt that houses the firing pin and the base of the ammunition cartridge case when fully seated in the chamber.
“Timing” is the adjustment of the gun so that firing takes place when the recoiling parts are in the correct position for firing.

Improper adjustment can cause malfunctions that could potentially result in injury to the user and damage to the weapon. The M2A1′s fixed headspace and timing configuration reduces risk and eliminates the need for Soldiers to master and execute this time-consuming procedure.
“The M2A1′s fixed headspace and timing enhancement resolves the number one safety issue for Soldiers operating the weapon system,” said Laura Batista, M2 Product Director, Product Manager Crew Served Weapons.
“The M2A1 addresses this concern by moving the adjustment task above the operator-level, thereby minimizing the risk of malfunctions or injuries in the field. This also frees up vital Soldier training time for other critical tasks.”
The upgraded gun delivers other tactical benefits as well. The M2A1 upgrade has a reduced signature as a result of its improved flash hider, which reduces muzzle flash by 95 percent.
This enhances the Soldier’s ability to use the weapon with night vision devices by limiting “white-out” conditions caused by the brilliance of weapon firing. A quicker barrel change also reduces the amount of time Soldiers are exposed to enemy fire and shortens the amount of time the weapon is out of operation.
Barrel Extension Key Upgrade
Not only is the M2A1 simpler and safer to use than the M2, it also incorporates a more durable barrel extension.
“The barrel extension is machined from maraging steel, thus increasing the durability and reducing part breakage over the current M2,” said Robert Sulzbach, M2A1 Project Officer.
Sulzbach works at the Weapons and Software Engineering Center at Picatinny Arsenal, which is part of the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC).
“Maraging steel is a strong, tough, carbon-free iron alloy, which contains nickel, cobalt, titanium and molybdenum,” Sulzbach explained.
“The steel is heat-treated to an extremely high tensile strength, resulting in longer life and greater durability for the component.”
The barrel extension also makes possible rapid barrel change-outs on the M2A1. With the older M2s, the barrels had to be screwed on. To change the barrel of an M2A1, a Soldier simply needs to slightly retract the charging handle, rotate the barrel by its carrying handle and slide the barrel off the receiver.
He then slides the new barrel into the barrel extension, locks it into the J-slot on the barrel support and the gun is ready to fire. A new removable carrying handle also serves to protect Soldiers from the extreme temperatures of heated barrels.
Fielding Under Way
The Army began upgrading its M2 fleet to M2A1s in 2011. The program is pursuing both upgrade kits as well as new procurements to modernize the Army’s entire M2 inventory of more than 54,000 guns.
All currently fielded M2s will be upgraded to the new M2A1 configuration at Anniston Army Depot (ANAD) utilizing Quick Change Barrel conversion kits.
In addition, the Army contracted General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products (GDATP) to manufacture and deliver 9,758 new M2A1s.
As of October 1, ANAD has converted more than 3,700 M2s into M2A1s and GDATP has delivered more than 7,400 new M2A1s.
In August 2011, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armor Division at Ft. Bliss, Texas, became the first unit to receive the new guns before their deployment to Afghanistan.
Since then, M2A1s have been fielded on a one-to-one basis by Total Package Fielders both to deployers and redeployers. Units’ displaced M2s are inducted into the ANAD overhaul/conversion program for conversion into M2A1s. The Army has fielded more than 8,300 M2A1s to date.
A Team Effort
The success of the M2A1 program is the result of various entities working as partners across the Army.
They include lifecycle management by Project Manager Soldier Weapons; engineering and quality assurance by ARDEC; contracting, logistics and sustainment, fielding and new equipment training by Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) and additional contracting support by Army Contracting Command — New Jersey.
“The entire team came together to deliver a significant upgrade that provides added capability for the Soldier,” said Col. Scott Armstrong, Project Manager Soldier Weapons.
“The team can be proud of their accomplishment and well-deserved recognition.”

Infrared detectors: Sagem and Thales strengthens Sofradir

Both manufacturers sell their infrared technologies developed in-house to their joint subsidiary.

French manufacturer of infrared sensors Sofradir comes to the acquisition of developments and manufacture of infrared detectors developed internally by Sagem and Thales - remember that Sofradir is a joint subsidiary of Sagem and Thales. The agreement provides for the transfer of technology Sofradir InSb Sagem and technologies QWIP (Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector) and InGaAs of III-V Lab, a GIE whose members include Alcatel Lucent, Thales and CEA. Already specialized in cooled HgCdTe infrared sensors and, through its subsidiary Ulis in uncooled imagers, and all mastery Sofradir infrared technologies industry.

Andiamo SAMP / T!

The SAMP / T used by Esercito is very close to the equipment used by the French Air Force (ten complete systems ordered four batteries each). It differs, however, by the presence of an additional command vehicle in each battery. Mounted on a truck 8 × 8, PC tactical offers an overview of current operations and operations planning at the battery. These tasks included in the network for the French Martha.


Eurosam announced that so far transferred to Italy owned by three full batteries (four launchers each vehicle and associated implementation), the fourth to be delivered at the end of the year. The fifth ordered, will be available at the end of March 2013. A full operational capability (FOC) is expected to Italy at the end of 2013. At this time, the last two batteries of Hawk transalpine still in service have been removed from service.

VAB Mk3: last line right before the show.

The first prototype of VAB Mk3, which has already traveled about 2000 km, just started endurance tests which lead to a rapid production, next year. A first batch of ten vehicles should be made in 2013 on the site of Renault Trucks Defense Fourchambault in the center of France.

Despite a high similarity of form, the Mk3 shares only 20% of elements with the previous generation of GVA. It has of course two additional wheels that make it a 6 × 6 and offers a maximum weight of about 20 tons (13 tonnes against the Mk1 and 15.8 tonnes for VAB Ultima). The recovery side of the vehicle, the extension of the body and its enhancement are passing the internal volume of 9.5 to 13.3 m3 compared to the VAB Mk2 without the overall width of the vehicle is changed. In terms of differences with the previous generation of VAB, we note the installation of a ramp rear (which will probably be optional on standard models) and the presence of boxes on both sides of the ramp , which may for example receive the group of air conditioning.

"Mini PILARw" for assault rifles

For its seventh edition, the show South African  AAD 2012 was moved from Cape Town to the Centurion (near Pretoria) on the airfield AFB Waterkloof .Nearly 350 companies participated in the event, representing more than 28 nationalities, including South Africa, China, the U.S., France, India, Russia, Germany, etc .... C ' was the opportunity to discover many new materials.Armaments industries of Russia and China were particularly noticed because of the number of exposed materials. We also highlight the dynamism of South African companies, including in particular we note Paramount group, Denel, OTT, Truvelo , etc ...

This four-wheel drive vehicle is a MRAP   spécilalité the firm OTT. Particular attention has been given by the manufacturer of the machine reliability and ease of maintenance and its repair.
The vehicle is equipped with an engine Ashok Leyland 57L HA 165, 6 cylinder 5.7 liter engine with 165 kilowatts a torque of 800 Nm. Its maximum speed is 100 km / h and range of 800 miles.
