Portugal signed an agreement with Tunisia to strengthen cooperation in the defense industry. The Portuguese Minister of Defence, José Aguiar Branco met his Tunisian counterpart Abdelkarim Zbidi, and also met with the head of the provisional government, Hamadi Jebali.
According to the two countries, bilateral cooperation is several decades old and there was an urgent need to update it. Two priorities have been defined: the cooperation among defense institutes and military health. The content of the agreement were not disclosed.
Portugal is since January 2013 Group Leader 5 +5 defense, which establishes military cooperation on the edge of the Mediterranean. The 5 +5 group meets Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Libya and Mauritania to the north of Africa, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Malta European side.
Visit to Tunis January 18, 2013 the Minister Aguiar Branco also aimed to prepare events within the 5 +5.Ll'opération Seaborder 2013, which runs off Portimão (south of Portugal), and ten meeting defense ministers in December 2013 still in Portugal.
